Vegetation & Stormwater Management

Frick Park--Urban Forest
Street trees have a variety of benefits, including many
related to stormwater management.

Urban Forestry

Urban forests are being increasingly recognized for their role in preserving and improving our urban environments.  Urban forests have extensive benefits, including but not limited to: improving water quality, reducing stormwater runoff quantity, improving water quality, reducing the urban heat island effect, providing wildlife habitat, increasing property values, and much more.

Trees provide a number of stormwater management functions.  Rainfall is intercepted by the leaves of trees; the rainfall is temporarily stored and some may be transpired back into the atmosphere before ever reaching the ground.  Tree roots promote infiltration, which reduces the volume of runoff and increases water quality.  Trees also improve water quality through the uptake of nutrients and other pollution. Trees can be successfully incorporated into stormwater best management practices in a variety of ways.  Learn more about urban forestry, trees, and stormwater management at the links below.
