FEMA Building code resources page

Includes the following:

Provisions of the 2009 I-Codes and ASCE 24 Compared to the NFIP (2011)

I-Codes Sample Checklists for Flood Hazards (2011)

Quick Reference Guide: Comparison of Select NFIP & Building Code Requirements for Special Flood Hazard Areas
This guide illustrates the similarities and highlights the differences between the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) minimum requirements and the requirements of the International Code Series (I-Codes) and ASCE 24, Flood Resistant Design and Construction (ASCE 24), a standard referenced by the I-Codes. The illustrations highlight some of the key similarities and differences between foundation types, lowest floor elevations, enclosures below elevated buildings, and utilities requirements contained within the NFIP and I-Codes for most residential and commercial buildings (classified as "Category II" structures by the building codes).

Flood Resistant Provisions of the 2012 International Code Series
(January 2012)
This document is a compilation of flood resistant provisions, prepared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), of the 2012 International Code Series (IBC, IRC, IEBC IMC, IPC, IFGC, IPSDC, IFC). Also included, as a separate document, is a summary of changes from the 2009 IBC. The 2012 edition of the I-Codes contains provisions that are consistent with the minimum flood-resistant design and construction requirements of the NFIP for buildings and structures.

In May, FEMA Region III hosted an NFIP Essentials and Best Practices webinar series, which was designed to provide best practices, helpful tips, and other practical information on the following floodplain management topics:

  • Letters of Map Change,
  • Building Codes and Floodplain Management,
  • Substantial Improvement,
  • Substantial Damage,
  • Managing Zone A Floodplains,
  • and Reviewing and Interpreting the Elevation Certificate.

These webinars were recorded, and the slide decks with audio and a transcript are also available here.
