BMP/SCM Maintenance
Generally, there is routine and in-depth non-routine maintenance required for stormwater BMPs/SCMs. Routine maintenance can include regular visits to and upkeep of BMPs/SCMs such as managing vegetation and removing trash or debris. Non-routine maintenance can include longer visits to repair larger problems such as removing and/or planting large amounts of vegetation, removing sediment, or repairing erosion (Stormwater Management Implementation Guide for Municipal Officials, pg 8-12, Erie County).
Just like any other infrastructure, stormwater best management practices (BMPs–also referred to as stormwater control measures or SCMs) need to be regularly maintained to ensure effective management of stormwater. Each BMP/SCM has its own requirements for maintenance, which can be found in the Pennsylvania Stormwater BMP Manual under each structural and non-structural BMP.
